U6 & U8 Academy Training Model

Welcome! This page gives you a quick overview of the U6 & U8 Academy Training Model at Plum Area Youth Soccer via some Frequently Asked Questions that we foresee being raised. Please reach out to our Director of Player & Coach Development with any questions that are not covered below.

What is the U6 & U8 Academy Training Model?

The Academy Training Model centralizes weekly training sessions for all U6 and U8 players. Instead of individual teams running separate practices, players train together in a structured, station-based environment designed to maximize engagement and development.

Why is the Club making this change?

At the U6 and U8 levels, technical foundation and confidence are the priority. Centralized training allows us to:

  • Provide a consistent developmental curriculum
  • Increase ball touches and repetition
  • Create equal learning opportunities for all players
  • Support and develop our volunteer coaches
This approach aligns with the Club’s Integrated Player & Coach Development Framework.

Are teams being eliminated?

No. Players remain rostered to teams, and teams continue to compete in scheduled games.

The change only affects how training sessions are delivered.

Are volunteer coaches being replaced?

No.

Volunteer coaches remain a central part of the program. They:

  • Assist during Academy training sessions
  • Work alongside the Academy coaching staff
  • Continue coaching their assigned teams during games
This is a partnership model designed to support both players and coaches.

What happens if the scheduled Academy practice night conflicts with another activity?

There will be multiple practice opportunities available each week, so players can choose a session that works best for their schedule. We strive to accommodate families and understand that conflicts may arise; our goal is to provide flexibility and support as much as possible.

What is the role of UK International Soccer?

UK International Soccer provides a development-focused coaching staff that:

  • Facilitates structured Academy training sessions
  • Delivers a consistent curriculum
  • Models training methods for volunteer coaches
They do not:
  • Make roster decisions
  • Control player placement
  • Coach teams on game day
All Club governance and player pathway decisions remain with PAYS leadership.

Will this cost more?

No. There is no additional cost to families.

Will my child still feel part of a team?

Yes.

Players remain rostered to teams, warm up with their teams, and play games with their teams. The Academy model strengthens training while preserving the team-based game experience.

Is this only for advanced players?

No.

The Academy model benefits players of all ability levels. Sessions are age-appropriate and designed to build confidence, comfort, and enjoyment of the game.

Does this affect travel soccer?

The Academy model strengthens foundational development for all players. Travel evaluation and placement policies remain unchanged and are managed by PAYS leadership.
